The educational system is top-notch. Wall Street Journal publication Offspring magazine rated the Los Alamos Public School system as the #1 public school system in the Southwestern US states in their Sep/Oct 2000 issue. Annually, over 80% of Los Alamos High School graduates go on to four year colleges. SAT scores have historically exceeded national averages by more than 30%.
There are six higher education institutions located within 40 miles of Los Alamos County. The University of New Mexico-Los Alamos (UNM-LA) campus provides undergraduate degree, computing, engineering, and technology coursework in support of local businesses and the National Laboratory. Tailored technical training for specialized technical fields is available through UNM-LA, the Northern New Mexico Community College in Espanola, and Santa Fe Community College. Small business training is available through the UNM-LA Small Business Development Center. Undergraduate and Advanced academic degree programs are offered through the UNM-LA, the University of Phoenix (Santa Fe classes), St. Johns College in Santa Fe, the College of Santa Fe, and the main campus of University of New Mexico in Albuquerque.
